Targets Breast Cancer (FTBC) is the US fashion industry’s worldwide
response to the devastating impact of breast cancer. Launched in 1994
at a White House reception hosted by then First Lady Hillary Rodham
Clinton, the national campaign was chaired and guided by Ralph Lauren
and supported by the nation’s leading retailers, fashion publications,
media, models, and the membership of the Council of Fashion Designers
of America (CFDA). The
success of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer in the United States inspired
partnerships between the CFDA Foundation and the leading breast
cancer organizations in Brazil, Argentina, United Kingdom, Australia,
and Iceland. Currently, there are active FTBC campaigns in Australia,
Brazil, Canada, Greece, the United States, and the UK. Campaigns
are being planned in nearly a dozen other countries, including China
and Japan. In addition, a number of international sponsors are entering
negotiations regarding worldwide sponsorship programs. To date,
the sale of over two million FTBC t-shirts, printed in various languages,
has netted nearly $20 million for breast cancer research, education,
screening, treatment, and patient support worldwide.
The
Fashion Targets Breast Cancer initiative entered a new chapter in
the United States in 1999 when Saks Fifth Avenue and the CFDA partnered
to kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a nationwide
shopping weekend to benefit FTBC. The shopping weekend continues
to be one of Saks' largest fundraising events, raising over $6 million.
A new version of the now-famous, blue “target” icon
t-shirt is sold nationally for FTBC each year.
For
the fourth consecutive year, Saks Fifth Avenue will host this charity-driven
shopping weekend in all of Saks Fifth Avenue’s 61 stores across
the country, as well as in the 51 OFF 5th outlet stores and saks.com
from September 18-21.
Other
FTBC products available this year at Saks will include a Coach tote
bag and a charm bracelet designed by Robert Lee Morris, with additional
charms created by Stephen Dweck, Diane von Furstenberg, Lisa Jenks,
and Betsey Johnson. This year’s T-shirt, designed by Ralph
Lauren, is a blue and white with _ length sleeve cotton Lycra®
blend tee with the FTBC logo in the center.
